What is Radio Frequency Microneedling?
Radio Frequency Microneedling (RF Microneedling) is an advanced cosmetic procedure that combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to rejuvenate and tighten the skin. This innovative technique addresses various skin concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and skin laxity. It has gained popularity the past couple years because of impressive results with minimal downtime. There are several different brands of Radio Frequency Microneedling, including devices like Vivace™, Genius®, Secret™ RF, EndyMed, Fractora, Morpheous8, Agnes and Scarlet-SRF.
But for the purpose of this blog I want to write just about the technology in general, and a different blog will be about a comparison on these machine and why we chose Scarlet SRF for our RF-microneedling services and Agnes-RF for precision RF sculpting.
How It Works:
- Microneedling:
- The procedure begins with microneedling, a technique that involves the use of a device equipped with fine, sterile needles. It is hand hald, around the size of a large ink pen. These needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin’s surface, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. This process triggers the production of collagen and elastin, essential proteins that contribute to skin firmness and elasticity. Think of it like aerating your lawn!
- Radiofrequency Energy:
- In RF Microneedling, radiofrequency energy is introduced into the equation. RF technology has been widely used in aesthetic treatments due to its ability to penetrate the skin’s deeper layers without causing damage to the surface. We use non-ablative RF for cellulite and skin tightening. But the combination of microneedling and RF energy allows for a more comprehensive and effective approach to skin rejuvenation, because it is going in deeper!
Key Benefits:
- Collagen Production:
- The controlled micro-injuries induced by microneedling stimulate collagen and elastin production. Adding RF energy enhances this process by promoting more collagen remodeling, leading to firmer, tighter skin.
- Tightening and Lifting:
- The thermal energy from RF promotes skin tightening. It targets the deep layers of the skin, leading to a more lifted and rejuvenated appearance. This makes RF Microneedling particularly effective for addressing sagging skin and mild to moderate skin laxity.
- Reduced Wrinkles and Fine Lines:
- By stimulating collagen production and improving skin elasticity, RF Microneedling can significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This makes it a popular choice for individuals seeking non-surgical anti-aging solutions.
- Scar Improvement:
- RF Microneedling can also be effective in minimizing the appearance of scars, including acne scars. The combination of microneedling and RF energy helps break down scar tissue and promote the growth of smoother, more even skin.
- Minimal Downtime:
- Compared to more invasive procedures, RF Microneedling typically involves minimal downtime. While there may be some redness and mild swelling immediately after the treatment, these side effects usually subside within a few days.
The Procedure:
- Consultation:
- Before undergoing RF Microneedling, individuals typically have a consultation with a qualified practitioner. During this consultation, the practitioner assesses the patient’s skin, discusses their goals, and determines whether RF Microneedling is an appropriate treatment.
- Topical Anesthesia:
- To ensure a comfortable experience, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before the procedure begins.
- Treatment Session:
- The RF Microneedling device is then applied to the skin by your provider. The microneedles penetrate the skin, creating microchannels, while the RF energy is delivered into the deeper layers. The combination of microneedling and RF is customizable, allowing the practitioner to adjust the depth and intensity based on the specific needs of the patient.
- Post-Treatment Care:
- After the procedure, patients may experience some redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn. The practitioner provides post-treatment care instructions, which will include the use of soothing creams and avoiding certain skincare products for a brief period. We use exosomes with our microneedling to decrease inflammation and increase collagen and elastic and hyaluronic acid production.
Considerations and Results:
- Number of Sessions:
- The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual’s skin condition and desired results. While some people may see improvement after a single session, a series of treatments is often recommended for optimal outcomes. I usualy recommend a series, one for each decade of life. If you are in your 40’s do 4 at 4 week intervals, 50’s for a series of 5 at 5 week intervals, 60’s do 6 at 6 week intervals. We know with Scarlet- SRF each session takes off about 2 years.
- Maintenance:
- Maintenance sessions may be advised to prolong the results. The longevity of the effects can be influenced by factors such as age, skin quality, and overall skincare routine. Once a year is a good routine to get on for your enhancements.
- Suitability:
- RF Microneedling is generally safe for various skin types, but not everyone may be a suitable candidate. Pregnant women, individuals with certain skin conditions, and those with a history of keloid scarring may need to avoid this procedure.
- Results:
- Results from RF Microneedling are typically gradual, with improvements becoming more apparent over the following weeks as the skin continues to regenerate. Patients often notice a smoother, more youthful complexion with reduced wrinkles and enhanced skin texture.
In conclusion, Radio Frequency Microneedling is a cutting-edge cosmetic procedure that harnesses the synergistic benefits of microneedling and radiofrequency energy. By stimulating collagen production, tightening the skin, and addressing various skin concerns, RF Microneedling offers a non-surgical solution for individuals seeking skin rejuvenation and improved texture. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is crucial to consult with a qualified practitioner to determine the most suitable treatment plan based on individual needs and goals.
