The Truth About Inflammation: Transforming Your Health by Tackling the Invisible Enemy
Hi there, Micah Lucie here! As we enter a new year, I know many of you have set intentions to pursue health-related resolutions. More exercise, more rest and better eating habits seem to be the trend, which is a great start to revamping your wellness journey. One thing that I find is often over-looked is mitigating inflammation in the body. Most people have heard the term inflammation, but few actually know what it means. Is it always bad? And most importantly, could it be the reason behind some of your most frustrating health challenges? Let’s dive in and uncover the truth about inflammation, how it affects your body, and what you can do to address it.
What is Inflammation?
Inflammation is your body’s way of responding to injury or infection. When you get sick or hurt, your immune system kicks into gear, sending white blood cells to the affected area to fight off infection and repair damage. This inflammatory response is meant to be a localized event. For example, if I step into a hole and twist my ankle, then the body will isolate the part of my ankle that is damaged, bring in white blood cells to fight any potential infection, and facilitate tissue and muscle repair. You’ll know if the inflammatory process is happening when you experience redness, swelling, heat, pain, and suppression of function. Just think about how you limp around after an ankle injury and have pain when you try to put any weight on it while walking. Those are ways the body is trying to protect the injured area so it can fix it.
Inflammation is also designed to be an acute response. This means that it’s a sudden and short-term reaction that typically lasts a few days. Inflammation is hard on the body as it takes a great deal of energy and resources to amp up the immune system.
The problem arises when inflammation becomes chronic. Instead of helping your body, chronic inflammation acts like a slow-burning fire, damaging tissues and disrupting normal bodily functions. Over time, this can lead to or exacerbate a range of health issues, from joint pain and digestive problems to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. Think about someone throwing a lit cigarette out of their car into the grass. A small flame can eventually burn down the entire forest if not stopped in time.
What is Inflammation? The Body’s Alarm System
Inflammation is like the alarm system that is triggered when an injury or infection happens. Whether it’s a sprained ankle or a cut on your hand, your body sends in reinforcements: white blood cells rush to the scene to repair damage and fight off infection. This rapid activity is known as the acute response. It means to be efficient and temporary. This is because the inflammatory response can be taxing on the body, as it takes a great deal of energy and resources to amplify the immune system.
But here’s the problem with inflammation: When this alarm stays on—buzzing 24/7—it stops helping and starts harming. Chronic inflammation is like a fire that smolders endlessly, damaging tissues and silently compromising your health. It’s linked to everything from joint pain and digestive issues to conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.
The bottom line? Acute inflammation is your body’s superhero. Chronic inflammation? The villain.
The Silent Signals of Chronic Inflammation
Chronic inflammation doesn’t announce itself with flashing lights. Instead, it whispers through ways you might chalk up to “getting older” or just “how things are”. Symptoms that could indicate a chronic inflammation problem include:
- Constant fatigue that coffee can’t fix
- Brain fog that makes even simple tasks feel daunting
- Stubborn joint pain
- Digestive woes like bloating or bowel movement irregularity
- Skin flare-ups including acne, eczema, or rashes
- Frequent infections or slow recovery times
Do any of these sound familiar? These subtle signs could be your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong.
The Root Causes: Why Inflammation Lingers
The question isn’t just what inflammation is but why it happens. Let’s break it down:
Diet
I firmly believe that what we eat and drink has the most impact on the state of our health. If you’re following the typical SAD (Standard American Diet) way of eating, then chances are you experiencing inflammation. Ultra-processed foods, refined sugars, gluten, and dairy are the most common offenders. Its also important to look at what we’re NOT eating in terms of limiting inflammation. Grass-fed proteins, organic vegetables, certain fruits, nuts, and seeds should be a staple of your daily diet and help provide the nutrient resources your body desperately needs. Its also important to be wary of imbalances that may be occurring. Omega-3s (like fatty fish) can help keep inflammation in check while excess omega-6 (think fried foods) can cause further inflammatory damage.
Stress
Inflammation and stress go hand in hand, with each one triggering the other to become more active. Chronic stress perpetuates inflammation, and inflammation worsens stress. This cycle can lead to long-term health consequences, including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic dysfunction. It can also affect the function of the brain, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates stress responses. This can lead to heightened stress sensitivity and difficulty managing emotions. Additionally, inflammatory compounds can interfere with neurotransmitter function, contributing to mood disorders like anxiety and depression.
Gut Health
The health of your gut is often one of the first casualties of chronic inflammation. Your protective intestinal lining becomes weakened as inflammatory cytokines attack the tight junctions holding the lining’s cells together. It’s like the gate of a castle becoming damaged, allowing undigested food particles, toxins, and harmful bacteria to slip through and enter the bloodstream. This is what is known as “leaky gut”. The beneficial bacteria in your gut microbiome become damaged, allowing harmful bacteria to set up shop. This could be tied to symptoms such as gas, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. Digestion is slowed, leading to improper nutrient absorption. This deprives your body of the essential building blocks it needs to function. Lastly, the gut and brain are in constant communication. Chronic inflammation causes distress signals to be sent to the brain, contributing to anxiety, depression, and brain fog.
Environmental Toxins:
The world around us can also be a source of chronic inflammation. Pollutants in the air we breathe, heavy metals in the products and foods we consume, and chemicals laced within most the things we put in and on our bodies all contribute to an inflammatory response.
Lifestyle Choices and Unresolved Issues
In addition to the foods we choose to eat, the other choices we make each day can have a massive impact on our level of inflammation. Getting restorative rest is key. Sleep is what allows our bodies to enter the “rest and repair” phase and give our brains and bodies a chance to clear out toxic buildup, fix damage to muscles and tissues, create healthier cells, and much more. Without the right amount and QUALITY of rest, your inflammation will remain, causing further damage.
Exercise is also a massive part of fighting inflammation. Exercise helps to lowe the levels of pro-inflammatory substances in the body. This includes C-reactive protein (CRP) and cytokines. Exercise promotes a healthy gut microbiome by increasing beneficial bacteria. Regular movement stimulates anti-inflammatory molecules. Its also great to reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels and sever the stress-inflammation connection. Lastly, exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, which can further reduce the inflammatory strain on your body.
Also, if you have any unresolved pains or injuries in your body, then those need to be corrected as soon as possible. A lingering injury will create a constant environment of inflammation. You might think you are “toughing it out”, but getting with a specialist to resolve lingering injuries or issues can be a massive way to cut inflammation out of your life.
